Does God require obedience?  Must I keep the commandments?

Does God require obedience?  Must I keep the commandments?
Is it necessary to obey God to maintain a relationship with God?  Do I have to keep His commandments in order to be saved?  The Gospel of John is often called the gospel of belief because of its clear emphasis on faith.  Bible faith, however, does not nullify the necessity of obedience.
Consider the following statements, all made by Jesus, himself, in the Gospel of John.
  • John 14:15:  “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
  • John 14:21:  “He who has MY commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.  And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father.”
  • John 14:23:  “Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word;  and MY Father will love him, and we will come to him and make Our home with him.”
  • John 14:24:  “He who does not love Me does not keep My words…”
  • John 15:10:  “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.”
  • John 15:14:  “You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.”
Don’t let anyone convince you that you don’t have to do what God says.
