“If you want to find God … look inside your own heart.” Really?

It is often suggested that the path to truth and knowing God is to look deep within yourself, to search your own mind and feelings. I believe it is important for us to know ourselves and be honest about what we find when we search our hearts. However, the Bible never indicates that my own heart, mind or feelings is the source of or path to Truth and God.
We do not know what is in the mind of another person, unless they tell us. So what makes me think I know what is in the mind and will of God, unless He tells (reveals) that to us?! (1 Corinthians 2:10-13).
What I really find when I look deep in my own heart is what I know, what I want and what I feel. I do not find what God wants. I do not find God’s (spiritual) truth. That is the reason I urge people to get serious about studying the Bible — the word of God, where He reveals His will and His truth!
Getting in touch with yourself may be a healthy practice in some respects, but it does not show us “the way, the truth and the life.” Knowing Jesus (who is the way, the truth and the life) is accomplished by studying God’s word and conforming our will to His will — changing our heart.
