Tongues – a Sign for Unbelievers

1 Corinthians 14:22

You should read all of 1 Corinthians 14 to see the entire discussion.  For now, why are tongues a sign to unbelievers and not believers?  The reason is that speaking in tongues in the Bible is the ability to speak a language not your own and that you have never learned.  That is impossible.  If a person did that, it would be a miracle!  Such a miracle may convince an unbeliever to see that God is working and that they should believe.

Believers don’t need more tongue speaking.  Believers need prophecy or the delivering of God’s word.  They have faith already;  they need to be taught further.

All of this shows us that modern day tongue speaking is not what was done in Bible times because it only convinces unbelievers that this is all foolishness.
