What is the purpose of baptism?
Every question about baptism is answered by God, in His word. Who, how, where, when and why baptize are all questions answered in scripture.
Different answers can be found in various Christian denominations and religions. I urge you to hold to what is found in scripture. Truth is found in the word of God.
Why should a person be baptized? What do the scriptures say?
Mark 1:4 — “John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.”
Mark 16:16 — “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
Acts 2:38 — “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 22:16 — “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”
Romans 6:4 — Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Galatians 3:27 — For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
Colossians 2:12-13 — “…buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses…”
1 Peter 3:21 — “There is also an antitype which now saves us — baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
There are other scriptures that mention baptism and teach more things about it. All these passages tell us what it does or what it is for and therefore tell us why we must be baptized. Call me if you would like to study Bible baptism more seriously. Don — 212-729-8356.
