What Does the Bible Say About (fill in with any difficult topic) ? |
When true believers ask what the Bible teaches about a particular matter, they want to know so they can do God’s will. They will accept whatever the Bible says because they want to please Him!
Others ask the same questions with the intention of doing what they feel is right. Such people become their own authority for right and wrong, good and evil, sin and righteousness. If the Bible does not give their “right” answer, they assume there is a problem in the text of the Bible.
Still others ask the Bible questions like the religious leaders in Jesus’ day asked Him – to test Him. In an effort to discredit the Bible (or Jesus), questions are put to the Bible by people who know that public opinion will strongly disagree. These controversial questions become an opportunity to discredit the Bible because “everybody knows ‘that’ cannot be right!”
In which category do I find myself? Rejecting the Bible because it tells me something I do not want to hear is like rejecting a doctor whose diagnosis is unacceptable. Is the doctor (Bible) reliable or not? That must be determined first. If yes, then, become a true believer and submit. If I pick and choose which parts of the Bible I accept based on my feelings about the teaching, I’m simply re-writing the book. I make myself its author, displacing God.
When you ask: “What does the Bible teach about __________?” — Why do you ask and what will you do with the answer? Is it the word of God, or not? I need to answer that question before I ask my own question.
